I remember sitting in the University of Virginia Wrestling room in 1999 listening to then-captain, now-coach Steve Garland and a half-dozen other wrestlers fantasize about what they would do if they ever win the NCAA championship. Almost every celebration included some use of available props, in this case ankle bands. Guys floated the idea of using them as a grenade (you've seen this before), others would lift them high above their head and then fall rigid to the mat like a tree in the forest. Still others had totally complicated, totally unprintable ideas they thought they'd like to express to 18k screaming fans. It was a comical moment that left an impression on me about the range of emotions and desires in the head of a post-match competitor. UVA in the top 10 once again in Directors Cup Standings

CLEVELAND, Ohio-Virginia finished seventh in the final 2010-11 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup competition for Division I schools. The final results were announced Friday by the National Association of Directors of Athletics (NACDA). The finish is the second best for the Cavaliers in the 18-year history of the Directors' Cup program and marks the fourth time the school has posted a top-10 finish. Virginia's best finish was third last year. UVa was eighth in both 1999 and 2009.

It marks the 18th consecutive year, since the program's inception, the Cavaliers have recorded a top-30 finish. UVa is one of 15 schools to rank in the top 30 of the final Directors' Cup standings in each year of the program's existence.

"The manner in which our programs have represented the University of Virginia this year is truly impressive," UVa Athletics Director Craig Littlepage said. "Earning another top-10 finish in this year's Directors' Cup demonstrates a true team effort, including the work of dedicated coaches, student-athletes and athletics department staff, support from the University administration and faculty, and the generosity of our donors. Winning conference and national championships are among our department goals and our third consecutive top-10 finish in the Directors' Cup standings reflects our continuing effort regarding our 10-year goals."

Teams or individuals in 21 of Virginia's 25 intercollegiate athletics programs advanced to postseason competition in 2010-11. UVa won two team national championships and two individual national titles. Virginia won the NCAA title in men's lacrosse and a fourth consecutive ITA National Team Indoor Championship in men's tennis.

A year after capturing the NCAA 800 meter crown indoors, sophomore Robby Andrews won the 800 meter outdoor title this spring at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. Matt McLean won the 500 meter freestyle at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships to become the fourth Cavalier swimmer to win a NCAA title.

The Cavaliers also won five Atlantic Coast Conference championships in 2010-11, which tied with Maryland as the most by any league school this year. UVa won ACC titles in baseball, women's rowing, men's and women's swimming and diving and men's tennis. Virginia has won 47 ACC championships in the last nine years, the most of any school in the conference during that period.

There were 10 Cavalier student-athletes who earned some form of ACC player of the year honors in their respective sport. That list includes: McKenzie Adams (volleyball freshman of the year), Alex Domijan (men's tennis freshman of the year), Sinead Farrelly (women's soccer offensive player of the year), Danny Hultzen (baseball pitcher of the year), Ben Kohles (men's golfer of the year), Anthony Kostelac (indoor and outdoor track and field freshman of the year), Matt McLean (men's swimmer of the year), Ariana Moorer (women's basketball sixth player of the year), Lauren Perdue (women's swimmer of the year) and Steele Stanwick (men's lacrosse player of the year).

Additional highlights of Virginia's 2010-11 athletics year included:

Four coaches were named ACC coach of the year (rowing - Kevin Sauer; men's and women's swimming and diving - Mark Bernardino; men's tennis - Brian Boland; baseball - Brian O'Connor).
Assistant women's golf coach Brian Bailie was the National Golf Coaches Association's assistant coach of the year.
Steele Stanwick became the third Cavalier men's lacrosse player to win the Tewaaraton Trophy as the nation's top player
Men's golfer Ben Kohles repeated as the ACC Golfer of the Year.
Emil Heineking won his second consecutive ACC men's cross country individual title.
Baseball pitcher Danny Hultzen became the first player in ACC history to win the Pitcher of the Year Award in back-to-back seasons. A first-team All-American and a first-team CoSIDA Academic All-American, he was the second pick in the Major League Baseball draft
The women's cross country team won the NCAA Southeast Regional title.
The Cavalier women's golf team's fourth place finish at the NCAA Championships was its best postseason performance.
Baseball pitcher Tyler Wilson won the Lowes Senior CLASS Award as the most outstanding senior student-athlete in Division I baseball
The men's tennis team's Michael Shabaz was the ITA National Senior Player of the Year, Alex Domijan was the ITA National Rookie of the Year and Sanam Singh received the ITA Sportsmanship Award
The Virginia baseball team was the No. 1 national seed for the NCAA baseball championships and made its second College World Series appearance
Wrestler Chris Henrich became the program's first three-time All-American
Paige Selenski was a Honda Award semifinalist for field hockey
The men's tennis team won its fifth consecutive ACC title and placed second at the NCAA Championships, its best finish ever
The Cavalier men's and women's swimming and diving teams won their fourth straight ACC titles
Men's swimming finished eighth at the NCAA Championships, its best finish ever
Women's tennis advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAAs for the first time
Junior Lindsey Hardenbergh became the first women's tennis player to earn All-America honors
Former Cavalier women's soccer players Becky Sauerbrunn and Lori Lindsey were named to the U.S. Women's World Cup soccer team

Stanford finished first in the NCAA Division I Directors' Cup standings for the 17th consecutive year with 1550.25 points and Ohio State was second with 1277.05 points.

UVa was one of four ACC programs to finish in the top-10 of the Directors' Cup standings. Other ACC schools in the top 10 of the Directors' cup standings were Duke (5th, 1171.50), North Carolina (6th, 1160.75) and Florida State (9th, 1079.00).

There are four Learfield Sports Directors' Cup awards, one to honor the institution with the best overall athletics program in each of the NCAA's Divisions I, II and III, and the NAIA. The Learfield Sports Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between NACDA and USA Today.

Wrestling Roots & Tim Foley Update

Update from the adventures of UVA alumni and former All American Tim Foley. I didn't realize that Virginia Wrestling Camps had competition in Mongolia!

I'm back from the first three-day stint at Mongolian wrestling camp. I'll be in Ulan Bator (the capitol) until Sunday or Monday and then heading back into the countryside for more wrestling camp. My project's all-or-nothing fundraising deadline is in eight days, meaning I won't be here to shepherd it into the finish line, thus I am making more appeals right now. If you can, just hit the Kickstarter link and back the project, almost every giving level has a return worth the support.

In case you thought I was kidding about doing this project and was just phoning it in from the South of France, I've gone ahead and attached a few photos. Ha. They're going to kill me.

Jones Falls Short

Brent Jones battled with the best in the nation last weekend at the US World Team Trials in Oklahoma but fell short. He lost to 2011 NCAA Champion Dustin Kilgore (Kent State) in the first round (Watch the match here). He went on to fall to Micah Burak (Penn) in the consolation round.

UVA Alum inducted into National Wrestling Hall of Fame!

Former University of Virginia wrestler Dr. Mike McCormick was inducted into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame on Thursday. His induction solidifies his place among the top wrestling officials that have ever stepped onto a mat. We are proud to have Mike as a supporter of CWC. He was inducted along with Olympic Gold Medalist Cael Sanderson as well as World Champion Dennis Hall.

Wrestling Roots Announcement

He is embarking upon an amazing journey and an important project for the sport of wrestling. I encourage you to read this, follow his story and support his efforts...

Wrestling Fans and Supporters:

The wrestling community works hard to be recognized by the mainstream media. We elevate our best competitors through films and books and wait every season for the NCAA tournament and a new hero to hit the national spotlight. However the mainstream media still largely ignores wrestling and the impact it has on the modern sports landscape. Our struggle for significant recognition can be linked to dropped programs at the college level and a sport that's losing traction with sports fans even as participation numbers continue to rise.

I've been working as a freelance journalist for the past few years, writing features in several national magazines including Men's Journal, FIGHT!, Bicycling and ESPN. As a former All-American wrestler I'm constantly pitching the stories of wrestling's best to national magazines. Despite my efforts most editors want me to write about what their audience is already talking about: new fitness trends and popular sports books. I took their recommendation and have worked for over a year to design a new approach to getting wrestling in front of consumers.

What I developed was the Wrestling Roots project, a Web and book series dedicated to re-imaging the way wrestling is viewed in popular culture by connecting our sport with the idea of natural, organic and primal living. I've been researching the emotional, physical and psychological benefits of wrestling and am excited to share those findings with my readership. With primal fitness a hot topic, I think consumers will want to read my information and the mainstream media will want to feature these ideas prominently in their magazines.

To launch this project I'm undertaking an ambitious 10-week wrestling journey through Mongolia and northern China which begins Wednesday, May 25th. I'll be living, eating and wrestling with Chinese in the northern Shanxi province before moving north to Mongolia for seven weeks of wrestling training, competition and outdoor adventure. From that experience will come lots of documentary film (we signed a filmmaker to the project yesterday!) and more importantly an adventure travel book that appeals to a general readership by addressing topics they want to read (e.g. primal fitness, natural movement sports, etc) and informing them on the role wrestling has played in the establishment and healthy function of societies for thousands of years. My experience coupled with research should result in a book that flies off shelves and produces a dramatic re-branding of our sport.

Don't worry, even though I'll be writing and researching I'll still be uploading videos of me being tossed around by 300 lbs. Mongolians to my Web site WrestlingRoots.org, which has become a hub for the documentation and promotion of traditional wrestling styles worldwide. As the site grows, so will the message that wrestling has a role to play in modern society and be fiercely protected.

I've been able to self-fund the adventure but am looking for backers to help me fund the writing process when I return home in August. I've established a sponsorship account on Kickstarter.com - a fundraising platform that utilizes social networking to create funding for up-and-coming writers, musicians and directors. Every project backer receives a gift for their sponsorship including tee shirts, books and even traditional Mongolian wrestling outfits which include tight blue Speedos. Grrr. If I don't reach my goal of $12,500 I won't ne able to guarantee the book.

To be clear: The goal is to re-brand wrestling and make it convenient (and chic) for intellectuals and decision-makers to support the sport. The wrestling community will support the project regardless - what we need is for fans in other sports to step foot in the circle. I'd like to have the book published by March 2012, in plenty of time for the Olympic games in London and discussions about the roots of athletic competition.

Sulzer, Papagianopoulos Compete in FILA Junior World Team Trials

While most of us are reminiscing on last season, the season never ended for UVA's Nick Sulzer and Derek Papagianopoulos. By virtue of their being All Americans at the FILA Junior National Championships, they qualified for the FILA Junior World Team Trials. Both advanced to the finals of their weight classes before falling short.

US Brings Home Medals from Pan Ams

RIONEGRO, Colombia – Two U.S. men's freestyle wrestlers claimed gold medals on the final day of the Pan American Championships on Sunday.

Winning titles were Nick Marable (Columbia, Mo./Sunkist Kids) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Steve Mocco, Bethlehem, Pa. (Lehigh Valley AC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.

Marable defeated 2010 World Cup champion Yunieski Blanco of Cuba in the championship finals, 1-1, 1-0, 1-0. The bout went into a third-period clinch, which Marable was able to defend from the defensive position and win the bout.

Marable, who was second at the 2011 U.S. Open, won three bouts on the way to the title.

Mocco dominated his competition on the way to four victories. He defeated 2008 Junior World silver medalist Elier Romero in the finals, 1-0, 2-0.

Mocco, a 2008 U.S. Olympian, had three straight pins to earn his spot in the finals. It was his third career Pan American Championship title, to go with victories in 2006 and 2009.

Three U.S. wrestlers won silver medals: Sam Hazewinkel (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Teyon Ware (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Keith Gavin (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs.

Hazewinkel lost to Luis Ibanez of Cuba in the finals. Ware was defeated in the finals by Lilven Lopez of Cuba. Gavin fell to Jose Diaz of Venezuela in the championship bout.

"Overall, we wrestled good. Putting five of seven in the finals was good and showed we're improving. Marable fell asleep a couple of times in his finals bout but was spectacular from the defensive position in the third-period clinch for the win. He showed heart and has darn good hips. Mocco dominated and there's not much more to say. The rest of our men looked good," said National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones.

Placing fifth at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. was Dan Erekson (Boise, Idaho/Bronco WC). Erekson was injured in the bronze-medal bout and lost by injury default.

At 60 kg/132 lbs., Mike Zadick (Solon, Iowa/Gator WC) lost in his opening bout to Alejandro Valdes of Cuba. When Valdez lost in the semifinals to Franklin Gomez of Puerto Rico, the NCAA champion from Michigan State, Zadick was not eligible for the repechage and did not place in the top 10 of the division.

The United States qualified athletes for the 2011 Pan American Games in six of the seven weight classes. Athletes in the top eight of each weight qualified their nations to compete in the Pan Am Games.

The United States placed third in the final team standings with 52 points, behind champion Cuba with 64 points and Canada with 54 points.

Duke Pickett won both the Junior freestyle and Junior Greco-Roman state championships and hopes to win his first Junior National title after reaching All American status last summer in Fargo. Wade Kammauff, a freshman at Charlottesville High School and a member of the Cavalier Wrestling Club placed 2^nd (160lb. class)in the Greco-Roman tournament by defeating Cabell Thomas of Richmond and Kaleab Fetahm of Alexandria to advance to the finals. Kammauff then lost to Christian Ortiz of Virginia Beach to place 2^nd. Wade also placed 3^rd in the Freestyle tournament by defeating Kaleab Fetahm once again, Robert Leso of Gloucester, Cabell Thomas of Richmond on pool matches and then defeated Quinlin Langford of Brentsville for 3^rd place.

Justin Zimmerman, a sophomore at Fluvanna High School and a member of the Cavalier Wrestling Club place 3^rd (105 lb class)in the Freestyle tournament. Justin lost his first bout to Cory Leonard of Richmond but then came back strong to defeat Matt Favazzo of Gloucester to reach the third place match. Just then defeated Ziad Rashed of Arlington to capture third place.

The top three wrestlers in each weight class in Virginia qualify for the USA Wrestling National tournament in Fargo, ND in July. Each qualifying wrestler must raise $1400 to attend the national tournament and must attend 2 training camps in June.

Badgers & Buckeyes top WIN's 2010-11 NCAA Div. I Recruiting Classes

Moving up one spot from its early-signing period ranking, newly-crowned NCAA champion Penn State gave the Big Ten a sweep of the top three spots in WIN's spring analysis of the top recruiting classes.
Coach Barry Davis' Badgers and coach Tom Ryan's Buckeyes all went 6-for-6 in their respective state tournaments to retain the No. 1 and No. 2 spots, respectively. And Ryan closed what was already a razor-thin Wisconsin margin with the biggest spring splash, four-time New Jersey state champion Andrew Campolattano (197) of Bound Brook (N.J.) High. Campolattano elected to focus on wrestling after originally making a verbal commitment to Rutgers to play football.
Penn State passed Oklahoma State for the No. 3 spot with solid performances from its November signees and a standout senior season from spring commitment Jordan Conaway (125) of New Oxford High. Originally a Liberty commitment, Conaway's state championship and Dapper Dan Classic victory couldn't have been more satisfying…or timely.
Wisconsin and Ohio State were the only schools with six recruits ranked in WIN's final Top 20 individual rankings, and only the Badgers and Penn State had two No. 1 recruits. North Carolina State and Pennsylvania were next, with five ranked recruits each.
Big Ten newcomer Nebraska (No. 6) gave the conference four of the top six spots. But the Atlantic Coast Conference, which announced itself in our fall rankings, was even more impressive this time around. North Carolina State moved up to No. 5, taking the conference's top spot. Meanwhile, Maryland, the best of four new teams at No. 17, gave the ACC five Top 25 spots. The Big Ten had six.
Other teams that made big moves: Utah Valley (to No. 9) and Arizona State (to No. 13). In addition to Maryland, Oregon State (No. 18) Oklahoma (No. 19) and Boise State (No. 20) were newcomers to the rankings. Dropping out of their fall spots: Binghamton, Chattanooga, Indiana and Northern Iowa.
Please note that these are based on what has been officially reported. We don't have access to each school's dozen-odd additional walk-ons. As you'll see in our next issue, All-American lists include several wrestlers who don't make it this high.
We had to make some hard decisions to narrow down the field, but here are some highlights of WIN's top 25 recruiting classes for 2010-11 at press time. Their probable college weights are in parenthesis.

1. Wisconsin: Davis' five fall headliners, four-time state champion Jesse Thielke (125-133) of Germantown High, five-time Minnesota champion Destin McCauley (149-157) of Apple Valley High, and three-time state champions Matt Kelliher (133-141) of Apple Valley, Cody Caldwell (157) of Waverly (Iowa) W.-Shell Rock High and Connor Medbery (Hwt) of Loveland (Colo.) High all won state titles easily, giving them 18. Add two more for Ryan McQuade (125) of Appleton West High, the major spring addition.
2. Ohio State: Campolattano became just the second New Jersey wrestler to win four state titles. Four of the five early signees followed suit, with Monroeville High standouts Hunter Stieber (133-141) and Cam Tessari (141-149) becoming four-time state champions and Johnni DiJulius (133) of Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit High and Kenny Courts (184) of Harrisburg Central Dauphin High winning for the third time. Heavyweight Orry Elor of Pleasant Hill (Calif.) College Park High finished third in state, but so did a lot of future stars.
3. Penn State: No problem for top-ranked Morgan McIntosh (184-197) of Santa Ana (Calif.) Calvary Chapel High and Nico Megaludis (125-133) of Murrysville Franklin Regional High (Pa.), who each became three-time state champions. North Carolina 4A champions Michael Waters (125) of Mocksville Davie County High and Collin Campbell (Hwt) of Roxboro Person High each added a second state title, and Campbell was a NHSCA Senior nationals champion. Luke Frey (133-141) of Montoursville High never won state after his freshman year, but was never far away.
4. Oklahoma State: Coach John Smith's Fab Four of November stayed that way, though an ankle injury kept Austin Ormsbee (133) of Blairstown Township (N.J.) Blair Academy from trying for a fourth National Prep title. Alex Dieringer (149) of Port Washington (Wis.) High, Zach Skates (174) of Broken Arrow High and Austin Marsden (197-Hwt) of Crystal Lake (Ill.) Central High also were winners, with Marsden becoming the first Illinois wrestler above Class A to pin his way to a state title since 1973.
5. North Carolina State: Coach Carter Jordan's latest class is looking better all the time. All this seven-man group includes is two four-time state champions, two three-time champions, a pair of state champions and a third-place finisher, Joe Gaccione of Sussex (N.J.) High Point High. Chris Phillips (174) of Monroeville (Ohio) High and Henry Carlson (157) of Virginia Beach (Va.) Frank W. Cox High won their fourth titles and Gaccione's High Point teammate, spring-signee Nick Francavilla (125-133), and Harrison Honeycutt (197) of Mooresville Lake Norman High, were three-time champions. Coltin Fought (125-133) of Benton High was a Senior nationals champion as well.
6. Nebraska: Jake Sueflohn (141-149) of Hartland (Wis.) Arrowhead High and Donny Longendyke of White Bear Lake (Minn.) were dominant in winning their second state titles. At the NHSCA Senior nationals, two of coach Mark Manning's other fall recruits, New Jersey champion James Green (149-157) of Willingboro High was the Adam Frey Award winner and three-time state champion Austin Wilson (157-165) of Hastings St. Cecilia High advanced to the finals. Two-time state champion Cory Brester (184) of Howells High will try to follow in brother Craig's footsteps at Lincoln.
7. Old Dominion: Coach Steve Martin couldn't have asked for more from his four most prized fall signees. Senior nationals finalists Taylor Moeder (149) of Lenexa (Kan.) St. James Academy and Pete Baldwin (149-157) of Kissimmee (Fla.) Osceola High won their third state titles and Robert Deutsch (125-133) of Voorhees (N.J.) Eastern High repeated in a rugged weight class. Chris Mecate (141) of Redlands East Valley High finally took California in what might have been that state's toughest weight. Unbeaten state champion Austin Coburn (174) of Midlothian Cosby High and Josh Clark (149) of Ettrick Matoaca High, who missed his senior year with a knee injury, signed on this spring.
8. Virginia: Plenty of success for coach Steve Garland's group, with Joseph Martinez (133) of Greeley (Colo.) West High winning his third state title, Patrick Gillen (197-Hwt) of Shelton (Conn.) High and Ethan Hayes (Hwt) of New Lebanon (Ohio) Dixie High each winning for the second time, with Gillen reaching the Senior nationals finals, and Nick Kidd (184-197) of Northfield (Mass.) N.-Mount Hermon School taking a National Prep Championships title. David Wesley (157-165) of Richmond (Va.) St. Christopher's School was a two-time National Prep placewinner and Vince Waldhauser (165) of El Dorado Hills (Calif.) Oak Ridge High was a state runner-up for the second straight year.
9. Virginia Tech: Quantity vs. quality? With their runner-up finish in the National Duals this year, coach Kevin Dresser showed he can fill a line-up. His tandem hails from two schools: two-time state champions Nick Brascetta (141-149) and Matt Stephens (165-174) of St. Paris (Ohio) Graham High and three-time champions Lex Ozias (141-149) and Bubba Scheffel (174) of Oakland (Md.) Southern Garrett High, both Senior Nationals All-Americans — all rank high on the quality meter. Austin Gabel (184-197) of Parker (Colo.) Ponderosa High also won three state crowns.
10. Cornell: Four of coach Rob Koll's six fall recruits were victorious this year. Bricker Dixon (125) of Kansas City (Mo.) Park Hill High and Joe Rendina (133-141) of Dundee (Mich.) High won their third state titles and twin brothers Owen (174) and Craig Scott (194-197) of Palmyra-Macedon High repeated in New York. This spring, Koll also added Senior nationals champion Nahshon Garrett (125) of Chico (Calif.) High, a two-time state champion, and Jacob Aiken-Phillips (Hwt) of Lawrenceville (Ga.) Central Gwinnett High, fourth in the Senior Nationals after being upset in the state final.
11. Utah Valley: For coach Williams, this is anything but beginner's luck. Jade Rauser of Townsend (Mont.) Broadwater County High ended his high school career unbeaten and twin brother Valyen added a third state titles as they will battle at 125 and 133. A pair of 157-pound recruits, fall-signee Logan Addis of Cottonwood (Ariz.) Mingus High and Napoleon Aniciete of Las Vegas (Nev.) High, are three-time state champions and Christopher Mayolo (149) of LaCenter (Wash.) High made it two. Also enrolling after completing missions are twins Chase (165) and Kyle Cuthbertson (174), each of whom won five Alabama state titles.
12. Pennsylvania: Though just two of coach Rob Eiter's seven recruits ended their seasons with wins, he's got to be happy. Charlie Lynch (141-149) of Severna (Md.) Archbishop Spalding High was the Outstanding Wrestler in the National Prep Championships and Mark Pinero (141-149) of Metairie (La.) Archbishop Rummel High won his second state title. Steve Robertson (157) of Lombard (Ill.) Montini High fell in the state finals in a battle of two-time state champions and Lorenzo Thomas (157-165) of Pittsburgh Central Catholic High and Ian Korb (174-184) of Cincinnati Elder High kept their national rankings despite falling short at state. New Jersey placewinner C.J. Cobb (141) of Williamstown High also was ranked during the season.
13. Arizona State: Fresh off an NCAA tournament that saw him crown two national champions, coach Shawn Charles continues to ride the wave with the success of his newest recruiting class. All they did was go 5-for-5, with Codey Combs (157-165) of Georgetown (Del.) Sussex Central High becoming a four-time state champion and earning Outstanding Wrestler honors. Statemate Issah Meade (174) of Camden Wyoming Caesar Rodney High, a three-time state champion, signed this spring. Jake Gentzler (125-133) of Andover (Kan.) Central High and Preston McCalmon (157-165) of LaFayette (Ga.) High also won their third state titles, and the fourth fall signee, two-time Missouri champion Blake Stauffer (174-184) of Neosho High, might have been the most impressive of all.
14. North Carolina: Two-time National Prep champion Evan Henderson (141) of Saltsburg (Pa.) Kiski School, John Michael Staudenmayer (165) of Plymouth Meeting Plymouth-Whitemarsh High and Alex Utley (174-184) of Cuyahoga Falls Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy all were state champions. Robert Henderson, Evan's twin brother, Cameron Throckmorton (125-133) of Hanover South Western High and Nick Catalano (149) of Canonsburg Canon-McMillan High ran into the numbers game in tough weight classes. John Guzzo (157-165) of Sussex High Point High will have something to prove after not being in the state series his senior year.
15. Minnesota: He owns six state titles — only the third American high school wrestler to do so — and Logan Storley (174) of Webster (S.D.) High now owns WIN's Junior Hodge Trophy as well. Two of Coach J Robinson's other recruits, Brad Dolezal (157-165) of Marshfield (Wis.) High and Jordan Kingsley (125) of Apple Valley High, won their third and second state titles, respectively. The title-match loss of another Apple Valley recruit, Steven Koegh (165), was a little out of left field, though.
16. Lehigh: Class AA state champions Mason Beckman (125-133) of Greenville H.A. Reynolds High and Nathaniel Brown (174-184) of Lewisburg High took care of state tournament business as expected, and only losses to top-five studs by Chris Dinnien (125-133) of Fort Washington Germantown Academy and John Bolich (174-184) of Willow Grove Upper Moreland High prevented them from winning state titles. Liking what he's gotten from NCAA champion Zach Rey, Santoro again ventured across the Delaware River for two-time New Jersey runner-up Jack Delia of Annandale North Hunterdon High this spring.
17. Maryland: The prime November recruit was T.J. Duncan (157-165) of Chattanooga (Tenn.) McCallie School. All he did was breeze to a fifth state title. Coach Kerry McCoy also scored with state runnerup Geoff Alexander (133) of Pittsburgh (Pa.) Shady Side Academy, Senior Nationals finalist Lou Mascola (141-149) of West Orange Seton Hall Preparatory School and two-time Delaware champion Josh Snook (165-174) of Wilmington (Del.) St. Mark's High.
18. Oregon State: Coach Jim Zalesky raided the state's top program, Roseburg High, for three-time state champion Seth Thomas (157-165) and state champion Drew VanAnrooy (133), also a Senior nationals All-American, last fall. He'll get immediate help from two-time junior college champion Tyrell Fortune (Hwt) of Clackamas Community College, with three-time state champion George Swartzlender (Hwt) of Lakeview High the future at that weight. Four-time state champion Zac Cardwell (174-184) of Lowell High also signed this spring.
19. Oklahoma: Incoming coach Mark Cody inherits a recruiting class that didn't make our fall Top 25, but quietly did the job this season. Fall recruits Cody Brewer (133) of Kansas City (Mo.) Oak Park High and Jeromy Davenport (149-157) of Sallisaw High won their fourth state titles, Daniel DeShazer (125) of Wichita Heights (Kan.) High won for the third time and Dalton Dennis (133) of St. Petersburg (Fla.) Northside Christian School and Sam Wheeler (184-197) of Copley (Ohio) High also won state.
20. Boise State: Another typical Greg Randall class: names that won't wow you, but wrestlers that will produce wins at the next level. November signees Chris Castillo (149-157) of Zillah (Wash.) High and Casey George (141-149) of Lewiston High won their fourth and third state titles, respectively. But it's the two state signees that put this class squarely in the Top 25: two-time champion Taylor West (157-165) of nearby Boise Borah High, impressive in his unbeaten senior season, and Scotty Bacon (174) of Corona (Calif.) Santiago High, third in a loaded 160-pound class.
21. Purdue: So…did coach Scott Hinkel land a 5-for-5 class last fall? He sure did. Drake Stein (184) of Princeton High won his second title and twins Doug (149-157) and Chad Welch (157) of Newburgh Castle High won at 152 and 160, respectively, with Chad adding a Senior Nationals title. Meanwhile, Rusty Maness (141) of Point Pleasant High won his fourth West Virginia title and Danny Sabatello (125-133) of Lincolnshire (Ill.) Stevenson High also repeated. California runner-up Preston Quam (184-197) of San Clemente High signed on this spring.
22. Central Michigan: Three-time Pennsylvania runnerup Zach Horan (125-133) of Nazareth High became state champion, and Joey Kielbasa (149-157) of Crystal Lake (Ill.) Central High won his third title. The only cloud in the Chippewas' silver lining was a season-ending knee injury that prevented Devin Pommerenke of Rogers City High from winning a third Michigan state title. Luke Smith (141-149) of Wheeling High, who took his first Illinois title with a dominating third period, is a key spring signee.
23. Iowa State: Coach Kevin Jackson lost perhaps his top fall recruit, two-time California state champion Nick Pena. But Tanner Weatherman (174-184) of Huxley Ballard High, who continues his family's Cyclone connection, became a three-time state champion Bo Schlosser (141-149) of Bettendorf High was a National High School All-American. Jackson's spring haul included three multi-time state champions: three-time champion Shayden Terukina (141) of Honolulu (Hawaii) Kamehameha School and two-time champions Logan Molina (165-174) of Lincoln (Neb.) Northeast High and Quean Smith (Hwt) of Highland Park (Mich.) High.
24. Stanford: Four-time National Prep champion Evan Silver (125) of Blair Academy and two-time Illinois champion Michael Sojka (197) of Winnebago High, one of the reasons the state's 215-pound class was loaded this year, ended their seasons impressively. So did Alex Paraschuk (141) of Fort Myers Riverdale High, a state champion, and a pair of spring commitments, state champion Josh Lauderdale (141-149) of Nine Mile Falls (Wash.) Lakeside High and two-time Tennessee champion Alex Manley (133-141) of Chattanooga Baylor School, who added "NHSCA Senior Nationals All-American" to his resume.
25. Cal Poly: The California state tournament being what it is, had coach John Azevedo gotten victories from all five early recruits, this class might be in the top five. All five were state placewinners, though, and three making the top three. Cody Tow (125-133) of El Dorado Union Mine High and Justin Lozano (174-184) of Selma High, a three-time state placewinner, were state finalists and Damien Arrendondo (149) of Clovis Buchanan High was third in state.

Wednesday night The University of Virginia celebrated another great year of academic and athletic achievements at our annual "All Sports Banquet". Matt Snyder and Nick Nelson represented the wrestling program well as usual, and brought home some very prestigious awards. Please see the descriptions below.

Matt Snyder (Lewistown, Pa.) of the wrestling team received the Craig Fielder Memorial Award for overcoming adversity and Maggie Kistner (St. Louis, Mo.) of the women's soccer team was the recipient of the Ralph Sampson Scholarship Award. Paige Selenski (Shavertown, Pa.) of the field hockey team received the Virginia Athletics Department's Distinguished Student-Athlete Scholarship Award.

Nick Nelson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) of the wrestling team and Liz Shaw (Richmond, Va.) of the women's swimming and diving team were co-recipients of the Ernest H. Ern, Jr., Award for outstanding contributions to student life at Virginia.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The Virginia wrestling team celebrated its successful 2010-11 season Sunday during its year-end banquet and recognized several members of the squad with awards. All-Americans Chris Henrich (Sr., Lansdale, Pa.) and Derek Valenti (Jr., Newton, N.J.) shared the Outstanding Wrestler Award.

Virginia won a school-record 19 dual matches during the 2010-11 season and finished in 23rd place at the NCAA Championships. Ten Cavaliers won 20 or matches each during the season.

Henrich went 35-5 this year and finished his career as the most decorated wrestler in Virginia history. He concluded his career with a 136-21 record after taking sixth place at the 2011 NCAA Championships. The all-time wins leader at Virginia, Henrich is the program's only three-time All-American.

Valenti made a remarkable turnaround in becoming Virginia's 13th All-American. He started his season 12-11 before rattling off 15 wins in his last 19 matches to finish 27-15. Valenti was one of just seven unseeded wrestlers to earn All-America honors at the championships this year. He suffered three losses at NCAAs - to the Nos. 2, 3 and 5 seeds, with all coming by three points or fewer. He also was the ACC runner-up at 149 pounds.

Matt Snyder (R-So., Lewistown, Pa.) picked up the Mike Krafchick Academic Achievement Award. With a 3.77 cumulative grade-point average, Snyder was named to the All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team for the second-straight season. Next year he will live on the Lawn at UVa, one of the premier honors accorded for any student at the University. He has aspirations of attending medical school after college.

Nick Nelson (R-Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) earned the John Pegues Character Award. Nelson finished 11-3 while battling through an injury-plagued season. He started the season 7-0 before suffering an injury in practice in November. Nelson returned in late February, then took third at the ACC Championships to earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Nelson serves as the president of Virginia's chapter of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Jon Fausey (R-Fr., Dalmatia, Pa.) was named the team's Freshman of the Year. Fausey went 29-10 this year during his redshirt freshman season at 184 pounds. He took third at the ACC Championships in earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Championships. He also was an All-ACC Academic Team selection this season.

Mike Salopek (R-So., North Huntingdon, Pa.) notched the Kevin Michaels Heart and Guts Award. Salopek battled through a season full of injuries to go 11-6. He was 10-4 in duals, including 4-0 in ACC competition. He was nationally ranked for most of the season but competed sparingly down the stretch while dealing with his injuries.

Stephen Doty (So., St. Louis, Mo.) earned the Hardest Worker Award. Competing at three different weight classes this season, Doty posted an impressive 25-9 record, with five falls. His top win of the year came against ACC runner-up Diego Bencomo, who went on to reach the quarterfinals at the NCAA Championships. Doty defeated Bencomo 7-5 in sudden-victory time.

Joe Spisak (Fr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) claimed the Freshman Academic Achievement Award. He currently owns a 3.5 grade-point average and was named to the All-ACC Academic Wrestling Team. Spisak was an NCAA qualifier at 133 pounds and went 23-16 during his rookie campaign.

Gus Sako (Fr., Cleveland, Ohio) picked up the 11th Man Award. Sako racked up 24 wins during his freshman season. He started the season at 133 pounds before shifting to 141 after Nelson suffered an injury in November. Sako finished with four falls, three tech falls and three major decisions.

Record Golf Outing!

It is hard to believe that the 6th Annual CWC Golf Tournament has come and gone. Josh Walker started this 6 years ago with the hope that it would develop into the event that it has today. Three generations of UVA Wrestling coaches were in attendance (George Edwards, Lenny Bernstein and Steve Garland) as well as 5 UVA All Americans (Garland, Tim Foley, Derek Valenti, Chris Henrich, Jim Harshaw). Three UVA 3X ACC champions (Kevin Michaels, John Pegues and Harshaw). Several of the scholastic parents and coaches golfed (Steve Atkinson, Cory Redifer, Chad Chadwick, Tim Williams), volunteered (John Kammauff, Lana Williams, Chrissy Chadwick) or sponsored holes (Davidson & Kitzman, PLC, Cirenza Family).

We had amazing weather and an even better time. We had a record 61 golfers and 34 hole sponsors. We had tons of raffle prizes and giveaways. I received many "thank you's" over the weekend for running the event. I have to, however, deflect much of the gratitude to Coach Alex Clemsen. Alex worked tirelessly, especially over the past few weeks, to garner hole sponsors and raffle prizes as well as help with logistics. It is a lot of work. Since NCAA's, he has constantly been on the road with the team at FILA Junior Nationals and University Nationals in addition to recruiting trips and a multitude of other life consuming tasks that come with being a full-time coach. So, if you see Alex, be sure to thank him for the great time and the support of CWC.

Coaches Manny Rivera, Brent Jones and Ross Gitomer also logged lots of hours to put on this event, so give them a "wrestlers handshake" the next time you see them.

Our "That's Why I Wrestle" worst team of the tournament award went to a group of three UVA wrestlers Chris Henrich, Jack Danilkowicz and Joe Spisak along with their trainer, Luke Donovan. Congratulations guys... I think.

The championship foursome was, appropriately, a mix of both our youth wrestling community and the UVA wrestling community. As a principle of our organization, CWC brings together the local wrestling community from the 5 year olds to the 25 year olds. At 12 under par, was the foursome included Steve Atkinson (father of a youth wrestler and UVA football Director of Player Development), Cory Redifer (also the parent of a youth wrestler), Dave Ebbott (UVA wrestler) and his father Dave Ebbott. Congratulations!

Special thanks to John Kammauff (director of our scholastic programs), Jay Domenic (UVA alumni) for his volunteer work as our treasurer, and Lenny Bernstein (former UVA head coach) for his work as both a volunteer for CWC and the volunteer commissioner for the Central Virginia Wrestling League.

Culmination of a Great Season

The UVA Wrestling banquet was entertaining and emotional as usual. Joined by wrestlers' parents, alumni John Pegues and Kevin Michaels, as well as several others in the extended UVA Wrestling family, the wrestling team celebrated its season and its wrestlers on Sunday afternoon. There was much to celebrate academically (highest GPA of any men's team at UVA) and athletically (2 All Americans, most dual meet wins record). The following wrestlers received awards.

Outstanding Wrestler- Derek Valenti (149) and Chris Henrich (174)
-Both All Americans at the NCAA Championships, with Chris becoming UVA's first 3X All American (after becoming the first 2X All American last season!). Derek has another year of eligibility remaining.

John Pegues Character Award - Nick Nelson (141)
-Nick overcame serious injury early in the season to comeback and beat a returning All American (Chris Diaz of VT) twice in the same day to qualify for NCAA's. During his injury, Nick went out of his way to support the team in any way possible. Nick is also the president of the Student Athlete Advisory Council.

Kevin Michaels Heart & Guts - Mike Salopek (197)
-Mike also fought through an injury all season. Unlike Nick, Mike was able to compete but was limited. He dealt with pain with dignity and courage all season to earn the heart and guts award.

Mike Krafchick Academic Award - Matt Snyder (125)
-Not only did Matt finish top 12 in the nation at NCAA's, he balanced a tremendous academic workload earning a 3.9 GPA. His efforts in the classroom combined with his off-the-mat success has earned him a prestigious spot living on The Lawn at UVA next year!

Mike Krafchick Academic Award 1st year - Joe Spisak (133)

-Competing as a first year is an enormous challenge. Earning a trip to NCAA's as a first-year is a feat. Doing so while maintaining a 3.5 GPA is a feat of which most simply are not capable.

11th Man - Gus Sako (133/141)

-After losing a hard fought battle with Joe Spisak for the staring 133 lb spot, first year Gus Sako filled in at 141 for an injured Nick Nelson. He battled with heart and pride which motivated his team in a powerful way by beating many of his bigger opponents on pure toughness.

Hardest Worker - Stephen Doty (174-197)
-"174-197" should say it all. In case it doesn't, Stephen is one of the toughest wrestlers in the nation. He won over 20 matches this season, many of them wrestling up one or two weight classes!

Maryland's John named ACC Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year

Terrapin junior heads up 2010-11 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland junior Kyle John has been named the 2010-11 Atlantic Coast Conference Wrestling Scholar-Athlete of the Year and heads up the sport's All-ACC Academic Team, as announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

All six league schools that compete in wrestling are represented on this year's All-ACC Academic Team, which includes five All-ACC wrestlers that earned All-ACC during the past season, and nine that competed in the 2011 NCAA Division I Championships.

Ten of the 20 student-athletes named to the 2010-11 All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team earned spots on the squad on at least one previous occasion.

John, a junior civil engineering major from Coopersburg, Pa., is a two-time All-ACC performer who finished the 2010-11 season ranked 15^th nationally in the 157-pound weight class. John finished the season with a 31-11 record for the ACC champion Terrapins, including a 15-4 dual match mark and a 4-1 record in ACC regular-season matches. He was 6-0 in matches decided by pins.

A five-time member of the Maryland Athletics Director's Honor Roll and a Dean's List honoree (3.5 GPA or higher) in spring of 2010, John has also served as an officer and active participant on the school's Student Athlete Advisory Council and has played a key role in National Student Athlete Day activities held at the university since the 2008-09 academic year.

Virginia led all schools with eight student-athletes named to the All-ACC Wrestling Academic Team. Maryland had four selections, and Virginia Tech three.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports. Candidates for the awards must have maintained a 3.0 grade point average for their career as well as a 3.0 for each of the last two semesters.

To be eligible for All-ACC Academic Team consideration, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.

Big Weekend!

Last weekend was a big weekend at the University National Freestyle Championships with UVA first year Nick Sulzer emerging as an All American! Congrats to Nick! Derek Papagianopolous and Tanner Hirstine both competed and won matches as well.

This coming weekend is a big one as this is the biggest social event & fundraiser that CWC holds all year! We have nearly 30 hole sponsors and 50 golfers registered.

Come celebrate our wrestlers from the five-year-olds through the 25-year-olds with golfers as old as 75-years old!

With that said, please note the following:

1) If you have not officially registered, you must do so by today here. This way we can assign you to a team and save you a spot in a foursome. We cannot accept walk-up registrations.

2) If you have registered and want to be assigned to a particular foursome, please let me know by today.

3) Registration begins at 1 PM and we will load carts for the shotgun start at 1:45 sharp.

My boys Nick and Matt wrestle at UVA, Nick is a 3 yr starter at 141 while Matt is just coming back from being off 4 yrs with a concussion.

We just completed our run at the NCAA championships with 2 All Americans.
We have had 15 wrestlers qualify for nationals out of a possible 20 over the past 2 years

In Philadelphia after nationals we had one of the emotional moments as we said good bye to Chris Henrich 3 X All American and the schools alltime win leader
it was one of those memories that will live with me forever and now you are going to be part of that special time

We have something very special at UVA and think it is great that you have accepted to join us. Steve, Alex, Manny and crew have your kids best interest at heart
One of my favorite TRUE quotes from Steve is:
"Here at the University of Virginia we have to recruit a certain type of student-athlete," Garland said. "We have to be very selective because this school is so demanding academically. We have to find the rare kid who we think can not just survive here, but thrive here academically, while at the same time balancing the demands of our training regimen. The guys that can do this are hard to find, but we feel like we brought in these types of student-athletes with this class. We obviously filled some real needs in terms of the weight classes we brought in, but most importantly we feel like we have brought in a great group of people that have high character and will represent this great university very well."

I am the informal social director of the team. I have been to all the tournies and throughout the ACC and have figured out hotels, restuarants, etc
I will throughout the year keep you informed on where we will be staying on road trips and other events.

US Open and FILA Juniors

Brent Jones beat another NCAA champion this past weekend with a first round win over Dustin Kilgore (Kent State). He then fell to 2010 US World Team member Jake Varner (NCAA champion, Iowa State). After two more wins, he came within an eyelash of beating NCAA Champion David Zabriskie (Iowa State) and a shot at 3rd place. Jones, who beat Zabriskie at the Sunkist Open in November, won the first period but narrowly lost the second period. He lost the 3rd period to give Zabriskie the win. (In freestyle, there are three 2-minute periods. Each is scored individually. A wrestler must win two of the three periods or win by fall in order to win the match.)
Jones finished in 6th place, qualifying him for the US World Team Trials this summer.

Stephen Doty also traveled to Cleveland to compete. Since the weight class had over 16 entries, a pre-tournament was wrestled on Friday to determine who could compete in the official competition. Due to a delayed flight, Stephen missed the weigh-in and could not compete.

Four UVA first years also competed in the FILA Junior National Championships held concurrently: Gus Sako, Nick Sulzer, Tanner Hirstine and Derek Papagianopoulos. All four wrestlers came away with at least two wins. Sulzer and Papagianopoulos finished as All Americans with 3rd and 4th place finished respectively. Congratulations to both!

Finally, Duke Pickett (Woodberry Forest School) competed for the Cavalier Wrestling Club finishing in 8th place.

Off-season competition of this caliber prepares our athletes for wrestling the best during the season. They should be applauded for taking the initiative to travel in the off-season, taking time away from academics during a crucial time of year. The committment of these athletes both on the mat and in the classroom demonstrates the dedication these student-athletes have to reaching their fullest potential.

CWC and UVA at the US Open This Weekend!

One of the most exciting weekends in wrestling is happening this weekend in Cleveland, OH. The US Open! UVA and CWC's own Olympic hopeful Brent Jones, 6th at the event last year, will be vying for his first championship. UVA 174 lber (and last season, 184 and 197 lber) Stephen Doty will also be joining him in the Open. UVA first year's Gus Sako, Nick Sulzer and Derek Papagianopoulos will be competing at the FILA Junior National Championships held concurrently. Follow the action at www.themat.com

Lana Williams, parent of former CWC wrestler Doug Williams and current CWC wrestler Parker Williams, informed me last week of a friendly challenge that has been issued by the Waynesboro City Council. Lana's husband Tim, former mayor of Waynesboro, has rounded up a foursome for the CWC Golf Tournament and has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the Charlottesville City Council to a round of golf. I am not sure just yet what the stakes will hold but it will certainly be a showdown to remember! Join our local politicians, business owners, UVA alumni and CWC family for the most fun that you will ever have on a golf course on Saturday, April 30th.

Hard Work Paid Off

The Central Virginia Wrestling League tournament, hosted by CWC in February, netted $2,200 for the club through concessions. Many of our parents stepped up to run the concession stand throughout the long day of wrestling. Their hard work paid off! Thanks to Lenny Bernstein, league commissioner and tournament director, as well as all of the other families for volunteering their time throughout the season and the league championship in particular.

U.S. OPEN PREVIEW: World medalists Herbert, Dlagnev, Zadick Seek National Freestyle Titles

The United States is determined to come back strong this season after a disappointing performance at the 2010 World Championships.

The return to the mat of 2008 Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo and 2008 Olympian Steve Mocco has provided a big boost to the freestyle program.

2009 World bronze medalist Tervel Dlagnev has continued to improve and progress. He looks poised to make a run at a World medal this year, but is in a tough weight class in the U.S. at heavyweight.

2009 World silver medalist Jake Herbert also has looked strong this year and is ready to make a run at his second medal.

Mocco, Dlagnev and Herbert are among the top wrestlers expected to compete at the U.S. Open in Cleveland.

Olympian and World silver medalist Mike Zadick also is expected to be back.

NCAA champion Jordan Burroughs of Nebraska is ready to make a splash in freestyle this season as well.

The U.S. is looking to crown its first World champion in freestyle since Bill Zadick won Worlds in 2006. This is a big year with the World Championships serving as a qualifier for the 2012 Olympics Games.

We began spring practices a few weeks ago and are working diligently on the golf outing (Sat, April 30th). Keep in mind that the UVA Wrestling Banquet is the day after the golf outing. If you are an alumnus who is interested in attending, get in touch with UVA assistant coach Alex Clemsen.

2011 NCAA Wrap up/UVA finishes in the top 25 again, this time w/ TWO All-Americans

Dear Friends,

What an incredible journey last week's NCAA tournament was. As always, the tournament was packed full of ups and downs, but in the end we were able to see two great kids earn All-America status when it was all said and done. Derek Valenit and Chris Henrich amazed us w/ heart, determination and loads of excitement the entire tournament. We also saw redshirt sophomore Matt Snyder come within one point of making All-American as well. His match with Minnesota's Zach Sanders was one of the craziest matches I have ever seen. Jon Fausey also won two matches out there beating both the Southern Conference Champion and the PAC 10 Champion. Jon is only a redshirt freshman and has a bright bright future.

The roller coaster ride, five day whirlwind left me about as emotionally/mentally exhausted as I've ever been. I will be sending out a video blog recap of my thoughts from the tournament later today, but for now, I wanted to just make sure I said thank you to all of you for your support. As many of you know, we sold out our NCAA tickets (120 of them sold like Bruce Springstein tickets at the Meadowlands) fast and had more fan support than we've ever had in our program's history. Looking up in the stands after every big win and seeing our group standing and cheering was so motivational for myself and my staff. So thank you again for being there and for screaming your heads off. It helped a lot!!

I also want to thank those of you who came to our alumni party after the championship ended on Saturday night. There was some pretty special moments during the speeches towards the end of the night. I had several people come up to me afterwards with tears in their eyes and tell me that they were blown away by our student athletes, staff and friends. The theme of the night was "family". I know there were some questions about the time and why we held it when we did. But, so you know, I am on the NCAA committee that actually runs the championship and couldn't be at a function at any other time. Fortunately, this is my last year I serve on the committee so I promise next year's function will be at a much more convenient time for everyone. That said, I do believe everyone in attendance was touched and I can't wait for this thing to grow each year. This brings me to my last point.....2012 NCAA's in St. Louis!!!!!!!

I want to make my first plea now to get EVERYONE back to the NCAA tournament for next year in St. Louis Missouri. It is my hope that we get even more people to this championship and keep the support for Virginia Wrestling growing fast. We return 7 NCAA qualifiers in Snyder (125), Spisak (133), Nelson (141), Valenti (149), Harris (157), Jedd Moore (165), and Mike Salopek (197). We also have a few tricks up our sleeves with guys like Nick Sulzer (who went 30-5 this year as a first year w/ 4 tournament wins) and a recruiting class ranked 9th in the country. The future is bright!!!!

PHILADELPHIA – The next step in life for Anthony Robles is a career as a motivational speaker.

And oh what a story he has to tell.

One Good Arm

Orange resident Taylor Reuss became a High School Prep All American this past weekend representing Woodberry Forest in the 160 lb. class at the National Prep Tournament held at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, PA. By winning the state championship the previous weekend, Taylor qualified to go to National Preps.

His wrestling career started in Orange with the Orange Wrestling Club run by Steve Shifflet and Tom and Bob Lillard. Taylor attributes much of his early successes through the coaching of former Orange standouts Nick Coffee, Ben Shifflet, Robert Lillard, and Ryan Goodsell who is now wrestling at VMI. Taylor tried to stay in touch with his former mentors and continues to get instruction whenever possible. The strong wrestling tradition in Orange County stems from the youth program run by these people and has proven substantial in Taylor’s success at the national level.

At Nationals Taylor wrestled his first match against a Gilman School opponent winning 19-4. In the second match he dislocated his shoulder against a post graduate from Wilbraham School in New England. The Lehigh trainer recommended that he not continue but Taylor, already winning 17-3 and obviously in a lot of pain, walked back out on the mat before anyone could stop the contest and finished the match with a final takedown winning 19-4. That win set up a rematch with a nationally ranked senior from Wyoming Seminary, Adam Morris. Taylor’s goal for the weekend was to win it all and he was on a roll… but medically the trainers told him his tournament was over unless he could prove to them he could protect himself enough to go back out. Taylor’s Woodberry Coach Colin Gay was consulted, and he decided to leave the decision up to Taylor because it was going to be his pain and injury if he decided to continue. The trainers said, “Your shoulder is probably going to dislocate again if you try it,” but Taylor had made his mind up. Taylor’s facial expression changed after the injury. He took a deep breath, focused, put his head gear back on, and walked back on the mat. He had made his mind up to finish what he had started. Taylor’s UVA coach was called and he said the same thing, “It’s going to dislocate again but knowing Taylor I don’t think you can stop him from becoming an All-American. He can do it.” It did dislocate in the third period of the third match more severely. Not surprisingly after it happened, the trainer reset his shoulder and Taylor put his head gear on and went back out to wrestle one of the dirtiest wrestlers he had faced all year.

Taylor had beaten Adam Morris 7-0 at the St. Albans’ tournament in the finals match three weeks before to win that title. Now he had to do it with one good arm. Morris immediately went after Taylor’s injured shoulder and put pressure on the shoulder from the start. Taylor admitted afterwards that he had no strength in that arm and basically wrestled the match one handed. The trainers said that they wouldn’t allow him to wrestle if he couldn’t protect his right side but Taylor faked his way through the medical exam and pushed through the pain without flinching. He won the match 3-1 to advance to the semi-finals.

Taylor’s father said, “We attribute Taylor’s toughness to his growing up with two older brothers who pushed him pretty hard and also the years of preparation with great coaching. That helped him through exactly this type of situation.

One of his friends, Ethan O’Connell, a Madison county multiple state place winner, invited him to come to three day camp run by UVA Coach and wrestler Scott Moore over in Madison. Scott Moore would become one of the most influential coaches from UVA along with Jim Harshaw and recently Ross Gitomer. Steve Shifflet a long time Orange booster coach said, “You have to send him down to Dresser Camp at Tech. That’s where the Orange kids get their summer instruction. So off to Virginia Tech he went for 30 days of wrestling camp in each of the next two summers. Taylor attended months and months of summer camps at Virginia Tech and last year at Navy Seal Camp at Annapolis, MD. Summer camp has been an integral part of his success. The saying goes, “Summer work turns into winter championships.” Another big influence in Taylor’s interest in wrestling is Coach Glover. He has been a positive force and a master motivator. He helps kids believe in themselves and achieve things that they didn’t think were possible. He is a Hall of Fame Coach and to Taylor, a Hall of Fame Person.

Even more influential than Taylor’s summer work is his devotion to Sunday Elite practice at UVA. Sore and often times injured after a long weekend of wrestling matches and tournaments, Taylor would go to the hardest practice of the week down at UVA’s Onesty Gym, initially with Scott Moore and later with one of the best coaches he has had the benefit of working with Jim Harshaw. Working with the UVA coaching staff has been a career changer. Taylor hasn’t missed many Sundays in three years down there. It is the best instruction available in Central Virginia. Right now Taylor is working with long time stand out UVA Graduate Assistant Ross Gitomer who wrestled his high school career at Blair Academy in New Jersey. Taylor’s father said, “Ross is an excellent coach. He had Taylor ready to win the National Championship and has had a huge impact on Taylor’s ability to compete at the National level. He is a game changer of a coach and an awesome kid.” When asked how he made it through the pain and injury of two shoulder dislocations to earn All American honors Taylor said, “I have good partners in the room and great coaches who taught me to believe that I can accomplish anything I want to work for so I just went out and did it. I was taught never to quit no matter what so I wasn’t going to let my team down.”

In 2011 with a record of 44-5 Taylor won the Freedom Invitational, St Albans’ Tournament in Washington D.C., the Prep League Championship, the Virginia Prep State Championship and placed Sixth [after injury default] in the National Prep Tournament. He is looking forward to playing linebacker for Woodberry Forest with Coach Clinton Alexander another one of his mentors and an incredible Coach this fall and to wrestling for the National Prep title again next year.

CVWL Tournament

Dear CWC Family,

I can’t thank you all enough for all that you guys did Sunday at the tournament. It always amazes me what people can attain when we all work together. We made for a great event and some lasting memories.

Unfortunately, we surrendered our CVWL championship to the Culpeper Cobras. Our team did finish in 5^th place and we had one champion in Jarrett Grimsley (we had many placers) and we had many great successes and a few disappointments. Overall the effort was outstanding. I hope all you parents stepped back and really looked at what your child was doing. Until now, many of these kids have only experienced t-ball and hot shots soccer athletics and now we were asking them to go into battle. There is no sport as demanding as wrestling. I saw so many of our guys overcome fear, pain, and fatigue. Win or lose, they all succeeded. These are the “life lessons” that we talk about on the t-shirts.

I will let the other coaches comment on the mats that they coached but I had the 7 and under kids and many of those guys had landmark victories. The techniques that the kids were executing were superior to the other teams (Dan Seimenski’s crossface cradle, David’s take downs, McKean’s powerhalf). I also thought that Jackson had the best takedown of the day and Ian Bolton had his best day yet as a wrestler.

We have a couple more events coming up. The ACC Championships are coming up this Saturday and we have our banquet this Sunday. I encourage everyone to come and support the UVA wresters that have volunteered so much to our kids this season. Just about every practice had a wrestler come out and help and they spent over 12 hours this weekend setting up mats and refereeing hundreds of matches. These young men are the top student athletes at UVA (highest GPA) and do more community service than any other athletes that I know. They are the type of young men that we want our kids to be around. The Banquet will be Sunday from 6-8 at the Boys and Girls Club on Cherry Ave. This event will be catered and we will have an awards ceremony.

One more thing, if your child has any of the club’s equipment, especially singlets, please bring them to the banquet or make arrangements with me to get them back. I know the singlets don’t look like much but they are very expensive.

I contacted the Korner restaurant about Catering the Banquet on Sunday. It looks like it will be $5 for the kids and $7 for the adults and will include Hot dogs and BBQ, chips baked beans, pickles and Mac Salad. The club will provide drinks, deserts and medals. The restaurant needs a head count by Wed morning.

From Middle School Coach Michael Eareckson...

As for myself, I would like to point out that although not many of us ended up on the "podium", everyone who participated in Sunday's tournament displayed a level of improvement and development that makes evident the amount of work they put into preparing themselves over the course of the season for their matches and for this event. No less importantly, all of our guys wrestled with class and showed the type of sportsmanship that would make any coach proud to be associated with such a terrific group of kids. Although of course I was very excited about Gabe and D'Shaun finishing 4th in their first year of wrestling, I am very proud of the efforts made by all of our first-year wrestlers in this tough tournament, as I have been all year. Heaven knows this is a difficult sport to learn, and although I believe it's more fun than any other sport I've ever tried, it takes a lot of gumption to get through that first year of getting thumped all the time, with few prospects for victory. But now that's behind us and with all the skills we've worked on and the conditioning and the strength training, and perhaps summer wrestling camp at the Commonwealth Camps, next season starts to look pretty good.

I'll save the rest of my comments for the banquet, and for now just say, Well done, All!

And I have to add my thanks to the parents who selflessly donated of their time and energy to sell the concessions, and run tables, and stay behind and roll mats and pick up afterwards.

The CWC Spring Session is geared for the experienced wrestler (minimum one year experience) who wants to get ahead. Train with other serious wrestlers who want to get extra mat time, train for spring tournaments and continue their journey on the mats. Since many spring competitions are in the international styles of freestyle and Greco Roman, we will focus on scholastic wrestling moves that are used in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.

Virginia High School State Championships

Taylor Reuss, (pictured) Woodberry Forest, Prep School State Champion- Taylor is a junior and has only been wrestling for three years. He now qualifies for the prep national championships to be held next weekend. He finished top 12 in the nation last season, one win from being an All American.
Duke Pickett, Woodberry Forest, Prep School State Runner-up – Seeded first, he lost in the finals 3-1 to UVA recruit David Wesley of St Christopher School. Duke is a nationally ranked senior and has had a lot of success. He will be wrestling for Cornell University next season, a team poised to win an NCAA Team Championship this season in Philadelphia. He will also be wrestling in the prep national championships. Duke finished 2^nd in the nation last season.

Zach Morris, Albemarle HS, 6^th place at the AAA and is ”All State” wrestler. Zach started wrestling for Coach Kammauff when he was 6 yrs old and wrestling has been his life ever since. Zach currently has offers from ODU and George Mason to wrestle in college.

Justin Zimmerman, Fluvanna High School, placed 5^th at the AA tournament. Justin only began wrestling four years ago he is often the hardest wrestler in the room.

Christian Chirico , Fluvanna HS place 3^rd at the AA tournament. Christian has been training with us for the past 4 years and had a dominating senior season. Unfortunately Christian ran into 3X State

Champ Rich Eva of Christiansburg in the semi-finals. Christian is hoping to walk on at WVU next season.

Max Weiner, Western Albemarle HS, place 5^th at the AA tournament. Max has trained with us for 5 yrs now had to wrestle through the tourney with his front teeth knocked out.

Nate Whitmer, Louisa Co HS, placed 5^th at the AA tournament. Nate is hoping to wrestle for the Coast Guard Academy next season.

Alex Via, Monticello HS, went 1-2 at the AA tournament and both of his losses were by 2 pts. Alex has been with us since middle school (he won the middle school state championship as an 8^th grader) Alex is a junior and I expect him to have a big senior season.

Jacob Anderson, who spent some time in CWC two years ago, placed 3rd in the prep school state tournament. He won 5 of 6 matches with 4 pins. He goes on to the National Tournament in Pennsylvania. Jacob wrestles for Fork Union Military Academy.
Shiruna Ntenda, Charlottesville HS, lost both of his matches at the AA tournament. Shiruna is only a sophomore and you will be seeing big things from him next season. Shiruna and his family (8 brothers and sisters) moved to Charlottesville 5-6 yrs ago from Africa and all the boys have taken to wrestling.

Howdy CWC fans,

We have had another big week of wrestling. We started off with UVA Assistant Coach Alex Clemsen running practice and some great positioning technique on Tuesday. If you wish, you can check out some of Alex’s technique videos on Flowrestling.org. We were then blessed with former UVA head coach Lenny Bernstein and former Slippery Rock Univ. head coach Jim Harshaw running Thursday’s practice. All three of these coaches were All-Americans in college. We then had another successful day against the Greene Co. team on Saturday. I was very pleased with the effort the kids gave. Some of the kids were rattled when the other kids put their arms around their necks. I will work with the kids on this and to not panic when this happens. I also wanted to recognize McKean Knowlton, Andrew Wiles, and John Davidson for their outstanding performances this weekend. John had a great come from behind victory over a really tough opponent. I am anxious awaiting the results of our bigger kids at the Louisa Tournament.

I would like to thank the Goulds for buying lunch for our 3 referrees. Those guys are UVA wrestlers and really appreciated it. Also thanks to the Charlottesville High School wrestlers that helped out as table workers.

Another big week ahead of us. I invited all of the kids to go to the MS practice on Monday night if they want to get some extra practice for the CVWL tournament. We will have our regular practices on Tuesday and Thursday nights. I will need the kid’s form turned in by Tuesday to get our kids registered for the tournament.

A couple of dates to keep in your mind. Saturday, March 5^th - UVA will be hosting the ACC Wrestling Tournament at JPJ Arena. The UVA wrestling team has done so much for us (refereed our matches, hosted us in their wrestling room and at Mem Gym, trained our wrestlers and coaches) that I hope that all of our families will come out and support them while they are defending the ACC Championship. On Sunday, March 6^th from 6-8pm , will have our end of season Banquet at the new Boys and Girls Club. If haven’t visited the new Boys and Girls Club, you are in for a real treat. It is a beautiful facility. Please let me know if you want to make this a pot luck, or should I get it catered.

Dear CWC Parents -

We had a great tournament Saturday , and although I don't have the official results, my (notoriously poor) memory tells me that we had at least four champions in Jeremiah Grimsley, Zach Scharf, Darius Bowles, and Jordan Grimsley. In addition, Jaret Grimsley won three of his four matches to take second place, making the day highly memorable for "team Grimsley." Clay and William Chadwick and D'Shaun Scott all bumped up to higher brackets due to lack of participants in their own divisions - Clay and D'Shaun each won a close tough match, and William wrestled impressively well against two strong and highly skilled high schoolers. Anthony Ramazani, Nathaniel Riley, Maxwell Barnes, Stephen Yoder, and Nick Zizulka also wrestled well in the tournament to win medals for themselves. Please forgive me for, and help me correct any omissions and errors.

I was surprised when I was asked this weekend if we were holding practice on Monday. I guess that speaks to how out of touch I can be with the rest of the real world during the season, as I didn't realize until much later that Monday is a national holiday. Yes, we will have practice on Monday at the regular time, but will end a few minutes early for the boys to have some socializing time after practice, with a bit of snacks, etc. We only have two more practices before our end-of-season tournament, so I wouldn't want to skip one of those.

So, a quick reminder that the CVWL Championships are on Sunday, Feb.
27th, and all team members are expected to participate. Any parents who want to help with staffing the concession stand (many hands make light work) should contact Abbey Fischman at abbeyfisch@gmail.com.

In addition the VAWA Folkstyle States tournament is on Saturday the 26th, for experienced wrestlers only, starting at 12:30 for Middle Schoolers. If you plan to participate in that tournament, please remember that the online registration closes on Wednesday. And please let me know so that I can be sure to find you there.

Brent Jones Update: OTC & Dave Schultz Tournament

Hey everyone,

Just wanted to fill you in on my last trip to the Olympic Training Center. I was out there for 2 weeks for the Schultz training camp to get acclimated before the Schultz International tournament. The training atmosphere was amazing and I could not ask for anything better. I had some of the best Americans at my weight to train with in Wynn Michalak and Dave Zabriski, but I also got to train with guys from Macedonia, Poland, Japan, Greece, Belarus, Canada, Mexico, Russia, and other countries. During the 2 week training camp I think I was wrestling the best I ever have. The guy I wrestled with from Macedonia ended up beating a lot of our tough American guys at 84 kg in the Schultz tournament and I pinned him 6 times during our goes. It was funny because the coach from Iowa would always shout "this is America, your (stuff) don't work here" every time I pinned him. I also made the Japanese guy cry during our simulation tournament a week before the tournament. I could not have been wrestling any better and my weight was perfect. 10lbs of weight came off so quickly when I got there as well. I think I was under weight after one or two days of being out there! That is always nice when you have an all you can eat cafeteria, with the best food around, that you can go to whenever you want! Training could not have gone any better!

A lot of people ask what do you do for fun when you are out there? Don't you get cabin fever from just being locked up on the Olympic campus and just wrestling? Well we do have a lot of fun actually. The guys that are all doing what I am doing and pursuing a chance to represent the USA at the Olympics is a small select group that you get to know a lot from training and competition. We get to be real close friends. Even those you compete with become your good friends. You love them off the mat, but on the mat you are enemies. People I was hanging out with included, my roommates were Troy Nickerson and Bryan Ortenzio, Steve Mytych, Terry Madden, Dave Zabriski, JP O'Conner, Nick Simmons, Drew Headlee, Josh Churella, Isreal Silva, Ryan Morningstar, Moza Fay, Matt Valenti and others. We all got to go to the movies, play cards, watch our favorite tv shows, and hangout with other athletes like the USA field hockey team. I would like to declare that Dave Zabriski and I are the official OTC spades champions! I also had the pleasure of being invited over to Jim Stanec's house for dinner and was the first person to be told that he will be expecting another child! It seems like the UVA coaches really love babies and that is awesome! Also, the weather was amazing out there, while it was snowing like crazy back on the east coast, so I definitely enjoyed a break from winter in the Rockies.

The Tournament started off on a good note. I was the 3 seed at the tournament with only the Russian and the Belarussian ahead of me. My first match I took on the #1 guy from Canada. This match was a great one for the crowd, but really should not have been as close as it was. I was fighting a pulled groin injury from wrestling the Macedonian in practice and re-injured it during this match. I won the first period with a lat drop as time was running out, lost the second period on push-outs, and won the third period with a standing Peterson to a pin when I was down 2-0 with 20 seconds to go. The throws I hit really got the crowd on their feet. In my second match I wrestled a kid that I teched in the NYAC tournament. I was winning the match pretty well when my groin just kept popping and tearing. We had to stop the match because of the injury and I had to injury default out of the tournament with a grade 2 groin strain/tear. This was very hard to take because I was wrestling so well and honestly thought I had a great chance to win the tournament, but this is wrestling and injuries happen. The only thing you can do after one happens is do everything you can to heal your body and get back to where you were in training as fast as possible. The mark of a true champion is what he does with diversity. Do you just hang your head and cry while thinking about what could have been? Or do you gather the troops and keep making a charge up that mountain of success? I chose to do the latter and start getting ready for the US Open in April. I have yet to wrestle my best or hit my peak in wrestling and I think that is awesome! That just lets me know that there is so much more I can do and accomplish!

Snyder Lives Life to Fullest On, Off Mat

Everybody has heard the phrase, “impossible is nothing,” but while few give those three words much thought, redshirt sophomore wrestler Matt Snyder lives his life by them. They are ingrained in his bones and run through his blood.

Snyder was born with a rare immunodeficiency disorder called Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, a disorder that affects blood cells and the cells of the immune system. It is a sex-linked disease Matt inherited from his mother, a disease that killed her brother when he was only 3 years old. In May 1993, Matt underwent a bone marrow transplant procedure. Doctors told his parents he had a 5 percent chance of surviving. Snyder did, and he has continued to defy the odds ever since.

“He is a miracle,” Virginia wrestling coach Steve Garland said. “He could have died but he survived. It is one of the reasons why he has such a good outlook on life, and why he doesn’t take anything for granted. He knows how close he was to losing everything.”

Fifteen years after the operation, Snyder was wrestling for Bloomsburg University, a small college in his home state of Pennsylvania, but he found himself wanting more. He wanted more of challenge, academically and athletically. He also wanted to attend the University, but to do so, Snyder had to convince a coach who knew very little about him that he should want Snyder too. The second challenge of Matt Synder’s life proved to be not nearly as difficult as the first.

“I didn’t know a whole lot about him,” Garland said. “But I got to meet him and his family [on an official visit], and it was pretty apparent that his parents were great people, that he was a great kid, that he was an overachiever and that he was a guy that we want on the team.”

Snyder joined the Cavaliers in 2009 and earned a starting spot at the beginning of the season. But things rarely come that easily for Snyder, and midway through the season he lost the wrestle-off for the 125-pound spot against his best friend and team captain redshirt senior Ross Gitomer. Garland told Snyder he wanted him to move up a weight class and wrestle at 133 pounds for the first time in his athletic career. Snyder was more than willing to step up to another challenge.

“Once the wrestle-off came and [Ross] beat me, from that point on I knew I was bumping up,” Snyder said. “I knew I had to put the team first, and do whatever the team needed me to do right then. And from that point on it was just get bigger and do what you can do.”

What Matt Snyder can do is shock everyone, time and time again. He again defied expectations by coming within a single point of an ACC Championship — at 133 pounds, a mass he had never weighed or wrestled at in his life.

For Snyder, such athletic achievements tell only a fraction of the story. Forever grateful to the doctors that saved his life, Snyder had always wanted to give back to the medical field — so it was only natural for him to go pre-med.

The time commitment and academic rigor involved in the pre-med curriculum proves too difficult for many non-student athletes. Throw in two-a-day practices and competitions all across the country every weekend, and such an academic track seems downright impossible. When one considers that Snyder did all of this and still made the ACC Academic Honor Roll in 2010, one starts to understand just who Matt Snyder is.

“My first year at school I knew I had to crack down, I knew I had to take my schoolwork really seriously,” Snyder said. “I’ve had to work for everything I’ve gotten in life. It’s just that hard work mentality that my parents instilled in me: If you work hard you can do anything, you can become whatever you want. You can achieve any goal.”

For Snyder, there is nothing more important than setting a goal. Achieving that goal is of secondary importance if he does everything within himself to get there.

“Personally, I feel I would rather fail at achieving a goal that was as high as it can be, rather than achieve a goal that when I set it I knew I should get there,” Snyder said. “I set my goals high and then I do everything that I possibly can to achieve them.”

Most people his age set goals or make promises absent of meaning and accountability, but not Snyder.

“That’s the difference between Matt and 99 percent of those kids,” Garland said. “Matt is 100 percent willing to do all the necessary things it takes to get to that ultimate goal. He enjoys the process, he commits himself to the process, and he’s willing to do all the annoying little things that nobody else wants to. The kids you meet nowadays say and claim a lot, but they’re not willing to do any of that stuff, and that’s the difference.”

One of the loftiest goals Snyder set for himself occurred on one of his very first days at Virginia, when he told his teammates that he was going to get a room on the Lawn. They dismissed the comment, but Snyder didn’t. Sure enough, when the most esteemed rooms at the University were assigned Monday, Snyder’s name was on that list.

When Snyder says his ultimate goal is to be a national champion and that he won’t settle for anything less than being an All-American this season, who could possibly doubt him?

Moore Makes Timely Return for UVa Wrestling

CHARLOTTESVILLE -- With no fanfare, Jedd Moore strode onto the wrestling mat Jan. 16 to take on University of Pennsylvania 165-pounder Stephen Burak.

Moore's presence in UVa's lineup held greater significance than many in the crowd at Memorial Gym that day probably realized. The redshirt sophomore from Mount Vernon, Ohio, was competing in his first match in some 21 months, finally healthy after a frustrating series of foot injuries.

"A lot of people when they redshirt and take a year off, they go to [the U.S. Olympic Training Center in] Colorado Springs or they wrestle in 40 open tournament matches," Virginia coach Steve Garland said. "Jedd couldn't do that, because he was physically unable to do so.

"We're talking a huge layoff mentally, psychologically, physically, everything."

Against Burak, whom InterMat ranks No. 18 nationally in the 165-pound class, Moore lost 4-2. Rust played a role in his defeat. Had his competitive edge been sharper, Moore said later, the outcome might well have been different.

Still, the experience "was good for the most part," Moore said. "Losing obviously wasn't what I expected, but it was still good to get out there and compete."

In his second match that day, Moore needed only 43 seconds to pin VMI's Ted Gottwald. "I think the jitters were gone," Moore said.

Five days later, he made a triumphant return to ACC competition, beating Kyle Kiss 7-2 to help UVa pummel North Carolina 28-6 in a dual meet at Chapel Hill.

Next up for Virginia is a dual meet with No. 9 Rutgers, which routed Virginia Tech 24-7 last week. The Cavaliers (14-5) host the Scarlet Knights (18-1) at 6 p.m. Friday at Mem Gym.

Having Moore back "is a big deal, just because of the way he competes," Garland said. "We're actually in the process of downloading his match from the Chapel Hill match onto our Facebook page, because people miss seeing the way he wrestles, the way he goes so hard and he never stops and he always wears the other guy out and he's so explosive."

Moore was a two-time state champion in high school at 152 pounds. As a Virginia freshman in 2008-09, he finished third in the ACC and advanced to the NCAAs at 157 pounds. In April 2009, however, he suffered a Lisfranc sprain of his right foot while wrestling at a freestyle tournament in Las Vegas.

Doctors also discovered three stress fractures in his foot, Moore said. The bones healed, but the Lisfranc injury continued to bother him, and he had surgery in August 2009.

"They pretty much just put two anchors and a wire in my foot to kind of stabilize that joint in my foot," Moore said.

The operation made Moore's decision to redshirt in 2009-10 an obvious one. At first, his rehab went well, and by last January "I was back on the mat and getting back into it," Moore recalled, "and I felt fine all through the spring."

Last summer, though, the pain returned -- in part because of the hardware in his foot -- and Moore spent about two months in a walking boot. He then resumed training, only to experience more problems about a month before Virginia's first dual meet.

Another operation followed, this one to remove the hardware. Problem solved, right? Moore wishes that had been the case.

Opening day for the 'Hoos was Nov. 6, when they faced Anderson, Rider and Gardner-Webb, respectively, in dual meets. Moore was on mat that morning, warming up, when more trouble arose.

"They weren't going to wrestle me all three matches," he said. "They were going to wrestle me one or two to see how it felt. I felt a little pop, and it ended up being a stress fracture, one of my metatarsals, my right foot again."

Doctors told Moore that the "foot just wasn't used to that stress," he said. "They said you really couldn't have predicted that to happen. I was wrestling that whole week before, and everything felt fine."

Back into a boot went Moore, who is as taciturn as UVa's coach is loquacious. ("To hear a full sentence come out of him in a week is a blessing," Garland said.)

Moore was on crutches for a while, too, but it was mostly a matter of letting the bone heal and then slowly progressing from there. He was cleared last month to return to practice.

He was nervous warming up for the Penn match, Moore admits, given what had happened on Nov. 6. He felt fine during and after the match, though, and "I don't have to worry about that any more, hopefully. It restores some confidence ... Once I get a few matches, I feel like all that rust will knock off pretty quick. I don't really feel I've lost anything as far as technique."

Garland said: "God willing, if he can stay healthy now, he'll just keep getting better each match. Because let's face it, he just needs reps, he just needs matches."

Virginia is still without star 141-pounder Nick Nelson (6-0), who has been out since mid-November with an elbow injury. His absence is another reason the defending ACC champion Cavaliers have not been as powerful as expected this season.

"When we lost Nelson, it wasn't just the fact that we lost a good wrestler that's going to get a lot of wins," Garland said. "We lost a guy that with the way he competes set a tone for the rest of our program. He goes so darn hard that that not only gets psychologically in the other team's head, it fires our guys up.

"We feel like Jedd is the exact same way. That's what it was such a big loss not having those two in the lineup this year, because it is a mental thing.

"When you get in dual meets, it's all about momentum, and when you've got these guys flying around the mat, it's huge, win or lose. Because, heck, they're going to lose some matches. But when they do, it's the way that they compete that fires the bench up anyway."

Nelson should return well before the ACC championships, March 5 at John Paul Jones Arena. In the meantime, Garland is delighted to have Moore back.

The Cavaliers' fifth-year coach loves to tell the story of his recruiting visit to Moore's home in Ohio. Moore ultimately chose UVa over Ohio State.

"He lives an hour past Columbus," Garland said. "Well, we flew into Columbus, and we drive to his house. He lives in the middle of nowhere. You hear that all the time, but this is the middle of nowhere. And we pull up, and there's like this little farmhouse, with the big field in the back with the barns, and there's some cattle and some stuff, and you walk into Jedd's room, and he's got a crossbow and kettlebells and Russian throw dummies. And sandbags on the front porch."

Garland laughed.

"That's the kid you want in your program," he said. "That's a pretty tough son of a gun there."

Weekend Recap, UVA goes 2-1 on weekend, loses heartbreaker to #21 Penn

Here is the match review that I received from Coach Garland after this weekend's 2-1 performance.

Dear Friends,

Copied below are the weekend highlights for the NC State match. We won the dual meet 26-12. Overall I was not happy w/ the way our guys competed however. I want to be clear and say that this is not to take anything away from NC State. I think they executed their style of wrestling well in a lot of areas. I just expect more out of our men when they step onto the mat and our guys were told as much.

We started off the dual in great fashion w/ Matt Snyder getting a pin in the first period, and then Joe Spisak earning a technical fall at 133lbs. We were rolling at that point. We then lost a close one at 141lbs w/ first year Gus Sako just missing the upset against nationally ranked Darrius Little of NC State. Little is one of the top ranked guys in the conference and is a great athlete. We had a very good game plan going into the match and Gus executed it very well. The match went into overtime and Gus made one mistake and was taken down w/ a duck under to lose the bout. Gus had a 3.3 GPA last semester and is extremely bright. He is one of the rare guys that listens to instructions w/ great detail and then executes what you ask him to do in a match. I think he's getting better every time out there. I think anyone that saw Gus wrestle this weekend knows he has a bright future here. At 149lbs we were completely caught off guard. We had been preparing all week for the NCAA Champion Darrion Caldwell and were surprised to see he couldn't wrestle due to illness. Frankly, we knew little about the wrestler they substituted in his place. This proved to be a big problem. The young man from NC State had an awkward style (an understatement of the week probably) for Derek Valenti and hit us w/ some big 5 point moves. Derek learned a lot from the match though and came back strong to pick up two big wins for us the following day. Derek is all heart. He's one of the mentally toughest kids I've ever worked w/ and he handled this set back very well. Shawn Harris lost to Colton Palmer at 157lbs in the next bout. Palmer is 22-8 on the season and wrestled well against Shawn. We got back on track in the next bout though w/ first year Conner Miller (the third 1st year we have in the line up) won in the last seconds w/ a takedown to secure a 3-1 win. Chris Henrich then won by technical fall and after a surprise loss at 184lbs (it was just an off night for a very tough Jon Fausey...I will leave it at that) Mike Salopek won 11-0 at 197bs. We are so excited to see Mike back in the line up. He's been battling some pretty serious injuries all year so it was a treat for everyone to see him back and wrestling well. The match of the night was the HWT bout. Jack Danilkowicz faced off w/ a very talented Eloheim Palma from NC State. Palma has been on a tear as of late and has loads of ability. Jack was able to pull out a hard fought one point decision to finish the dual meet for our program. Again, here are the highlights:

Also, copied below is the recap of the Penn match. This dual meet came down to HWT. We were all tied up at 15-15 heading into the last bout. The crowd was into it, both benches were into it. It was a great match. Unlike the day before I felt that our team fought hard in every position. I was very proud of the way our kids wrestled overall. I tell them all the time, "I don't want us to get used to losing ever...but if you fight like that and wrestle your heart out, we as coaches will never be upset w/ you". I think our guys just came up on the short end of the stick w/ a very good Penn team. Credit to the Penn coaching staff and their athletes. I was impressed w/ them. The big highlight of the dual meet for me was the long awaited return of Jedd Moore. Jedd has been hampered w/ a foot injury for almost two years now. He hasn't competed in over 20 months and his first match back was against a top 20 ranked wrestler from Penn. W/ the score tied at 2-2 Jedd was in on the winning takedown (he had a single leg lifted in the air) but the Penn wrestler jumped through his legs and was able to "funk" him for the winning takedown. All in all, I was so amazed w/ the way Jedd wrestled after so much time off. We are very proud of him. Some other highlights were Nicky Gordon earning a technical fall at 157lbs and Jon Fausey earning a major decision (and bouncing back very well after the loss the day before) at 184lbs.

CWC vs Madison & Orange

Greetings CWC Family,

Wow, we somehow pulled it off this weekend and won one and tied the other in a great tri-meet. We won against Madison 42-9 and tied Orange 39-39. I was very impressed with our kids, not only in the effort they gave us but also in their sportsmanship and behavior. We have a really special group of kids on the team.

Thank you to all of the parents that helped make the day a success and all of the coaches as who came early and stayed late. A special thanks goes out to Coach Lenny Bernstein and John Davidson for covering a very tough job in refereeing, Daphne and Co. for providing food and drinks, CHS students Kate Kammauff and Ben Mattern for scoring, and everyone that made the day a success.

The middle school team will be traveling over to Buford Middle School on Thursday and our whole club will be going to Staunton (Riverheads HS) on Saturday at noon for a dual meet with the Gladiators.

Jones' Recap on the Team USA December Training Camp

Hey CWC and UVA Wrestling Fans,

I just wanted to take the time to update you all on my latest training experience. A couple of weeks ago, I attended the December Team USA training camp hosted by Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Every month the USA National team gets together to have a training camp where everyone can train in one environment with each other. The training involves going over every position that is vital to winning internationally, film study of the latest World Championships that has been broken down to every scoring move, and match days to simulate a world championship. Also, it is just a good time to hang out and make friends with the best in our country. This month the Finger Lakes Wrestling Club was chosen to host the training camp at Cornell University. All the best around my weight were in attendance including JD Bergman, Jake Varner, Les Sigmon, Jake Herbert, Keith Gavin, Raymond Jordan and others.

Training camp was hard but I was able to benefit a lot from it. I really got to see that international wrestling has incorporated more Greco positions into its freestyle, which makes me very happy because it happens to be a strong point of mine. I also got to get one on one technique and pointers from Team USA coach Zeke Jones. This was very beneficial because it showed me little things that will go a ways in helping my wrestling. A big thing that I learned was that no shot is a bad shot you just drive through and usually you will get a point for a push out at least or put yourself in good position to score. My favorite wrestling experience was going Greco with Jake Varner in which I had very good results. Other than that we all went to watch The Fighter in theaters. I highly recommend it. All in all it was a great training camp in which my wrestling benefited a lot from by learning little things I could change and having a different mind set on other things.

Cavaliers' Recruiting Class Ranked Ninth Nationally by W.I.N.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia's recruiting class for the 2011-12 school year has been ranked ninth nationally by Wrestling Insider Newsmagazine (WIN). The class, comprised of nine student-athletes from across the nation, marks the sixth straight top-25 recruiting class compiled by head coach Steve Garland. He was assisted in the recruiting efforts by assistant coaches Alex Clemsen and Manny Rivera.

The Cavaliers' class of 2014 consists of Blaise Butler (Belvidere, Ill./Boylan Catholic) Patrick Gillen (Shelton, Conn./Shelton), Ethan Hayes (New Lebanon, Ohio/Dixie), Nick Kidd (Hyannis, Mass./Mount Herman), Joe Martinez (Platteville, Colo./Greeley West), Zach Nye (Enola, Pa./East Pennsboro), Mason Popham (Kennett Square, Pa./Unionville), Vinny Waldhauser (El Dorado Hills, Calif./Oak Ridge) and David Wesley (Mineral, Va./St. Christopher's).

"Here at the University of Virginia we have to recruit a certain type of student-athlete," Garland said. "We have to be very selective because this school is so demanding academically. We have to find the rare kid who we think can not just survive here, but thrive here academically, while at the same time balancing the demands of our training regimen. The guys that can do this are hard to find, but we feel like we brought in these types of student-athletes with this class. We obviously filled some real needs in terms of the weight classes we brought in, but most importantly we feel like we have brought in a great group of people that have high character and will represent this great university very well."

Here is a breakdown of each student-athlete, with their prospective college weights in parentheses:

Blaise Butler (149/157 pounds)

• Junior National All-American

• Fila Cadet runner-up

• Two-time Illinois state placewinner

"Blaise is another young man that after meeting him and his family we just felt like we couldn't let him get away," Garland said. "He is one of the most explosive athletes of this class and probably that we have on our entire roster at this point. We love the way he constantly attacks and the fact that he is able to hit moves that most kids his age just can't execute. Blaise hasn't even come close to hitting his potential yet, and we expect him to wrestle at a much higher weight class than he is competing at now. Expect to see him at 157 pounds here at UVa."

Patrick Gillen (197 pounds/heavyweight)

• New England champion

• Connecticut state champion

• Three-time NHSCA All American (seventh as junior, fourth as sophomore, third as freshman)

• Super 32 placewinner

"Gillen is another one of those guys that after meeting him for five minutes you know that this school would be a perfect match for him," Garland said. "He is one of the most articulate young men I have ever met. He is just a great all-around guy that we think will complement the dynamic of this team's culture very well. On top of this though, he has some amazing credentials. Patrick is a three-time NHSCA All American, New England Champion and multiple state champion. He is another one of those guys that is constantly looking for competition. His father has put in countless hours bringing him to every tough wrestling event they could find and it will undoubtedly pay off down the road. We expect Patrick to start off at 197 but will probably move up to heavyweight at some point in his career."

Ethan Hayes (Heavyweight)

• Ohio state champion

• Two-time Ohio state finalist

"Ethan is a state champion from one of the greatest wrestling states in the country in Ohio," Garland said. "He has competed against some of the best in the nation his entire high school career. He is looking for his second state title this season at 215 pounds but is projected to wrestle heavyweight for us. The thing that attracted me to Ethan was his humility. Here I am in this young man's house talking with him about his state championship, and all he can talk about are his teammates and coaches. He's pretty special."

Nick Kidd (184/197 pounds)

• Currently ranked No. 20 nationally at 189

• Placed third at prep nationals

• Placewinner at Beast of the East

• Massachusetts state champion

• Placed fourth at Super 32

"Nick took third place at the National Prep Championships last season, with his only loss coming against the then-No. 1 ranked wrestler in the country," Garland said. "We look forward to him winning that national championship this season and much much more. Nick is a very hard wrestler to scout because he is a very tall wrestler for his weight class and uses his leverage very well. His best position is top and we feel like this will set him apart in college."

Joe Martinez (133 pounds)

• Currently ranked No. 10 nationally by InterMat at 130

• NHSCA Champion (junior division)

• NHSCA runner up (sophomore division)

• Two-time Colorado state champion and three-time state finalist

"What Joe has done at the state level is already extremely impressive, but what he has been able to accomplish at the national level is what really got us excited," Garland said. "Joe has competed at all the biggest national events, taking second at the NHSCA Sophomore Nationals and winning the NHSCA Junior National Championship this past spring. We think that competing at this high a level will make him an immediate impact guy on our team."

Zach Nye (197 pounds)

• Currently ranked No. 14 nationally by InterMat at 215

• Pennsylvania state runner-up

• Took third place at Super 32

"Zach embodies everything we want in a wrestler here at Virginia," Garland said. "He is an intelligent, focused and hard working kid that won us over from the first phone call we had with him. I remember getting off the phone with him and telling my wife, ‘I have to have this guy.' On top of the fact that he's such a great kid, he's a stud on the mats as well. He placed second in the state as a junior in Pennsylvania, in arguably the toughest state in the country for wrestling, and has his sights set on the championship this year."

Mason Popham (141 pounds)

• Took fourth at NHSCA junior nationals

• Placed seventh at Pennsylvania states

"Mason has a great feel for wrestling," Garland said. "He comes from a great area of the country for our sport and has competed against the best of the best his entire life. This past spring he finished fourth at the NHSCA Junior National Championships and this is when we started the recruiting process with him. However, it was after getting to know Mason through the course of many phone conversations that I began to really get excited. I think that his best days are yet to come."

Vinny Waldhauser (165 pounds)

• Currently ranked No. 12 nationally at 171

• Two-time Calfornia state placewinner

• State runner-up last year

• Took fourth at sophomore nationals

"Vinny has tons of raw ability," Garland said. "He is just a very gifted athlete. He has a knack for pinning people as well and in our world that is a heck of a good thing. Vinny was a NHSCA All American before his junior season even began but he got on the national stage by battling to the state finals match last year in California (California is one of the only states that still has one true state champion for the entire state). He has set some high goals for himself this season and we look forward to following along."

David Wesley (157 pounds)

• Currently ranked No. 17 nationally at 160

• NHSCA Junior National Champion

• National prep runner up

• Took fourth at Super 32

"David is another guy that wrestles everywhere," Garland said. "We love this about him. The best kids seek out the best competition. This is what David does as well as anybody in the country. If you looked up all the major offseason events over the past three years, it is a good bet that David was there doing well. David is as strong a kid as I've ever recruited. He is very good defensively and very hard to score on. We feel that his mentality sets him apart from most. He had his breakout tournament in winning the NHSCA Junior National Championship this past March and we think the best is yet to come."

Sulzer Wins Cleveland State Open, Three More Cavaliers Place

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia freshman wrestler Nick Sulzer (Cleveland, Ohio) won the 165-pound class at the Cleveland State Open Saturday in Cleveland, Ohio. It marked the third open title in five tournaments for Sulzer this season. He also won the Wolfpack and Mat Town opens and took third at the Eastern Michigan Open.

Sulzer won five straight bouts to capture the championship and run his record to 18-3 this season. In the title match he defeated Purdue's Pat Kissel by major decision, 19-8. He was dominating en route to the title, winning three of his five matches by major decision or technical fall.

In addition to Sulzer capturing the championship at 165, three Cavaliers registered third-place finishes in their weight classes. Joe Spisak (Fr., Boiling Springs, Pa.) nabbed third place at 133, piling up five wins, including two pins and two tech falls, as he improved to 10-4 this year. Shawn Harris (R-Jr., Cleveland, Ohio) scored third place at 157 after bouncing back from an early loss to win six straight bouts. He went 7-1 in the tournament to push his record to 11-4 this season.

Jack Danilkowicz (R-Sr., Green Oaks, Ill.) also took third place at heavyweight and won five straight in the consolation bracket after dropping his opener. He is now 11-4 this year.

Virginia returns to team dual-meet action next Saturday (Dec. 18) when it travels to Campbell for a 1 p.m. match.
